Toymaker Hasbro and the oil and gas company Halliburton rose after reporting results today that were better than analysts were expecting.
PayPal surged 5% on its first day of trading as a standalone company after its separation from eBay.
Mining companies fell as the price of gold slumped to a five-year low.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 13 points, or 0.1%, to 18,100.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose a point to 2,128. The Nasdaq composite rose eight points, or 0.2%, to 5,218.
European markets rose after Greece’s banks reopened for the first time in three weeks.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.37%.
