Unions to seek more pay rises if inflation continues to climb
19/01/2007 - 07:30:24The trade union movement is warning that it may seek to renegotiate the recent social partnership deal if inflation continues to rise over the coming months.
Yesterday, the Central Statistics Office said the inflation rate hit 4.9% in December, its highest level in almost four years.
The Towards 2016 agreement negotiated by the social partners last year includes annual pay rises of around 4.6% for workers.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions says it will be looking for further increases if inflation goes up to around 6% in the coming months.
A precedent was already set in this area when extra pay rises were inserted into the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness as the inflation rate hit 7% in late 2000.
