TV channel has more cities in its sights
Ireland’s newest television station, City Channel, originally aimed solely at Dublin audiences, today announced plans to broadcast in Waterford and Galway.
Some 16 staff, including local presenters, will be taken on when dedicated services for cable viewers in the two cities begin in May.
David Harvey, City Channel founder and chief executive, said it was a significant move and would build on successes achieved in the capital.
“It will provide more local content to audiences in Galway and Waterford and offers access for local businesses who wish to promote their operations through an established media outlet.
The station will begin broadcasting to the two cities in the coming weeks. Programmes with a greater regional emphasis will air in May with two magazine shows, Galway in Focus and Watching Waterford, giving viewers a slice of life in the west and south-east.
Launched in Dublin last summer as part of the basic ntl package, City Channel has already targeted niche markets with programmes for the capital’s 40,000 Polish migrants and shows aimed at the gay community.
The channel began broadcasting to 110,000 homes in October.
On top of the Galway and Waterford expansion, the station is also targeting a potential audience of 450,000 along the east coast from as far north as Dundalk and to Greystones, Co Wicklow in the south.
