The best new apps of the week

Animating your video selfies, keeping up with the rugby and a couple of very cool games are all part of our apps round-up this week.

So without further ado, lets get to it.

Toca Blocks

Designed as a game for kids, Toca Blocks can in fact be addictive to users of any age. In short, it’s a colourful, dynamic sandbox game in which users have a blank canvas to create any sort of world they want using various blocks. There’s an element of Minecraft to it all, but think 2D, brighter colours and a little less serious.

(iOS – £2.99)

MSQRD

Remember those crazy video filters for selfies on Snapchat? This is pretty much those beefed up, expanded and given their own app. The app drops various animations or masks onto your selfies – including such things as celebrity facial hair. It links up with social media for easy sharing too.

RBS 6 Nations Championships App

This time next week the 6 Nations will be upon us, and with a new era starting for England under Eddie Jones, Scotland buoyant after a great World Cup and Ireland keen to defend their title it should be a pretty tasty tournament.

(Free – Android)

VR Theater for Cardboard

Now, this one comes with a mild disclaimer as you’re going to need a Google Cardboard or similar casual virtual reality headset in order to take advantage of this cool app. The idea is once you have saved movies or TV shows to your phone, you open them in this app and get to watch them under the impression you’re doing so in a theatre of various settings. A bit out there and glitchy as it’s a beta, but a great way to have fun with VR.

(Free – Android)

Walking Dead: Road to Survival

(Screenshot)

Updated this week to add new features that enable bigger multiplayer experience, the aim of the game here is very much in line with the show – your faction must survive. Take control of all the key characters and battle to control iconic places from the series including Woodbury and the prison. It’s also worth noting that there’s actually a new, original story in here from the graphic novel’s creator, Robert Kirkman. A very good way to kill the time while the show is off the air.
