A new survey has shown that Irish shoppers are among the most honest in Europe.

It also revealed that retail crime, including shop-lifting, costs every person in Europe an average of just over €70 each year.

The research, carried out by the British-based Centre for Retail Research, showed that shops in Europe lost almost €29bn from retail crime and wastage this year.

The stores blamed shoppers for almost half their losses, and their employees for almost a third.

Britain is the worst country in Western Europe for the problem, while Ireland was ranked 14th, ahead of only Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
