Solicitor O'Donnell in High Court appearance

Bankrupt solicitor Brian O'Donnell has appeared at the High Court to answer questions about his and his wife's finances.

The couple were declared bankrupt in Britain last month but were ordered by Judge Peter Kelly to appear today after Bank of Ireland said there were alarming disparities given by Mr O'Donnell and his wife Mary Pat in their financial statements.

Bank of Ireland is attempting to recover more than €70m from the couple, who once had a property empire worth hundreds of millions of euro spread around the world.

Mr O'Donnell told the court he and his wife had made eight attempts to work out a plan for their properties approved by the bank - but these were rejected.
