SIPTU concerned about Cullen’s Aer Lingus remarks

28/03/2006 - 13:18:54
SIPTU has expressed concern that the Government may be planning to push through the privatisation of Aer Lingus without consulting trade unions.

Earlier today, Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said he planned to bring proposals for the sell-off before the Cabinet next week.

He also said he believed the trade union movement would come on board once the privatisation process begins.

However, SIPTU is already holding a ballot for strike action if the sale goes a head without the agreement of unions being sought.

Asked about the minister's remarks today, SIPTU spokesman Michael Halpenny said the minister gave an undertaking that he would meet with unions before seeking a final decision on the matter from the Cabinet.

"It is disturbing to say the least that the undertakings that were given don't appear to be stacking up too high at this point in time," he said.
