SIPTU is calling for fire safety audits to be carried out on properties across the country.
It comes after defects were identified in complexes at Longboat Quay in Dublin and Riverside Walk in Co Meath.
The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin has already called for a wide-ranging audit.
SIPTU's Brendan O'Brien says it is vital for the safety of the public and firefighters.
“There’s a huge issue out there in relation to the self certification of buildings and an urgent audit of these premises is required to identify what risks may be out there to the public," Mr O’Brien said.
"And also for our members in the fire fighting services to know what the risks are in advance when they are heading to these incidents so they know precisely what resources need to be deployed what the hazards are there."
