Revenue Commissioners can now examine how you use your credit and debit cards, as part of efforts to catch tax evasion
The move is part of the organisation's plan to focus more on internet commerce, according to the story carried in the
this morning.Earlier this week the Revenue announced it would pursue Airbnb hosts who have not declared tax on their earnings.
Now they plan to use credit and debit card spending to gauge whether someone is living beyond their means - which may indicate that they are not declaring all taxable income.
The system works with information provided by credit card transaction processing companies, who are obliged to hand over information under recent legislation.
That information is then fed to an analytics programme that flags those who are living beyond their means, according to Revenue's record of their income.
