Retailers are reporting that the post-Christmas sales are off to a good start.
Retail Excellence Ireland says yesterday saw a 20% increase on the same day last year.
They confirmed that yesterday's St. Stephens Day sales were the busiest in six years.
It comes on the back of a disappointing December for the retail sector.
With most sales now underway, or due to get started in the next couple of days, retailers are hoping for a boost.
David Fitzsimons, Chief Executive of Retail Excellence Ireland says it's especially important for smaller retailers.
Mr Fitzsimons said: "The day could not have gone any better with both footfall and spending significantly up on last year. One retailer we spoke to yesterday had done 50% of last year’s St. Stephens Day turnover in the first hour yesterday.
"After a somewhat disappointing December for retail, many businesses were carrying significant amounts of stock into yesterdays Sales equating to very deep discounts, which a significant cohort of consumers responded to. We have noticed that savvy consumers are willing to postpone fashion, footwear, home and prestige and luxury brand spending into the Sales period."
