Retailers braced for losses as bus strike enters second day

Retailers are bracing themselves for a possible drop in customers later as the national bus strike enters its second day.

Close to one million people were affected yesterday when drivers at Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann walked out over plans to privatise up to 10% of routes.

With two out of every five shoppers in Dublin using the bus to reach the city centre, retailers are worried that footfall may suffer.

Spokesperson for Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Graham McQueen said suburban shopping malls may be more popular this bank holiday weekend.

"The weather was quite good yesterday, so people were able to use Dublin bikes and to walk," he said.

"Today, the weather isn’t so good, so you'll see more people jumping into cars - whether they'll head to the city centre or to out-of-city shopping centres remains to be seen."
