Robert Pitt is to be appointed as group chief executive officer of Independent News & Media, it was announced today.

He will take up his role in Autumn 2014.

A graduate of University College Dublin, with a BA in Economics, he most recently held senior management roles in the retail sector in Eastern Europe.

From May 2012 he has been chief operations officer of Tesco Czech Republic, prior to which he held the positions of managing director, Tesco Franchise Stores in the Czech Republic; and operations director, Hypermarkets Tesco, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

He held senior management positions for Lidl in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland from 1999 to 2007.

From 1997 to 1999 he was general manager at Shibo in Beijing, prior to which he worked with PwC in the Czech Republic.

He takes over from Vincent Crowley, who stepped down as the Company’s CEO in May 2014.

"His selection is the result of a thorough recruitment process undertaken by the Nominations Sub-Committee of the Board in conjunction with an independent recruitment firm," according to an INM statement.

Welcoming Robert Pitt’s appointment as CEO, INM chairman Leslie Buckley said: "The Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Robert Pitt and to welcome him to the Company.

"The news publishing sector faces many challenges and Robert Pitt, whose extensive experience includes change-management and digital strategy, is well equipped to lead INM into the future."
