Overcrowding in Dublin Airport 'could hamper tourism'
Rising prices and the overcrowding at Dublin Airport are two major obstacles to the future growth of our tourist industry, according to the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation today.
The group have published their end-of-year review today which analyses the current state of tourism in the country.
The number of visitors to Ireland from almost all areas is up on last year.
But spokesperson Eamon McKeon says that with over 70% of all visitors passing through the capital's airport, more space is badly needed.
“The capacity in Dublin airport is just grossly inadequate to handle the numbers that are going through there presently,” he said.
“However, the planning for Terminal 2 has got through the initial stages and is scheduled to open in late 2009. We really badly need that as the numbers going through the airport will be growing in 2007 and 2008. So it's terribly important it comes through on schedule and without delays.”
