Volume of retail sales down 3.7% in January

The volume of retail sales decreased by 3.7% in January 2012 when compared with December 2011, according to official figures released today.
This constitutes an annual decrease of 0.8%, according to the Central Statistics Office.
If Motor Trades are excluded, the volume of retail sales decreased by 1.6% in January 2012 when compared with December 2011, while there was an annual decrease of 2.7%.
Among the main contributors to the monthly decrease are motor trades (-21.3%),
department stores (-18.4%), electrical goods (-12.0%) and clothing, footwear &
textiles (-5.7%).
Monthly increases were recorded in non-specialised stores (+0.2%), pharmaceuticals medical and cosmetic articles (+4.1%) and food, beverages & tobacco in specialised stores (+2.0%).
The value of retail sales decreased by 3.7% in January 2012 when compared with
December 2011 and there was an annual change of -0.3%.
If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly increase of 0.3% in the value of retail sales, an annual change of -1.9%.
