The number of people signing on the dole fell by 1,900 last month, the CSO revealed today.
Official figures from the Live Register revealed the numbers on unemployment benefits totalled 359,076 in August, a decrease of 39,249 in the last year.
The report follows statistics released earlier in the week that the seasonally adjusted number of persons unemployed was 206,500 in August 2015, an increase of 400 when compared to the July 2015 figure or a decrease of 32,200 when compared to August 2014.
Unemployment is at 9.5%, down from 11.1% in August 2014.
The Central Statistics Office said there were 208,399 men seeking dole payments in August and 150,677 women, while the number of under 25s signing on has fallen by 11,629 to almost 50,000.
Despite the improving jobs market, the report revealed the long-term unemployment crisis remains with 164,269 people claiming benefits for a year or more.
