Minister welcomes domestic tourism figures

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has today welcomed figures that show that the number of domestic holidays trips in Ireland grew by 3.6% in 2014 compared to 2013.

Minister Ring was speaking following the release this morning of the CSO’s Household Travel Survey for the fourth Quarter of 2014 and for 2014 as a whole.

He said: "The welcome growth in domestic tourism performance is a sign of an improving economy here at home and provides a further boost to our tourist industry.

"This is on the back of a very strong overseas tourism performance.

"The Guesthouse and B&B sector will be particularly pleased with their excellent performance last year (the number of domestic trips staying in this category grew by 27% in 2014 compared to 2013), with the self-catering/rented house sector (+10.3%) and hotels (+3.6%) also performing strongly in the domestic tourism market.

"I am particularly pleased to note that trips in the fourth quarter of 2014, a traditionally quiet time for domestic tourism, grew by an encouraging 10% compared to the same period of 2013."
