Average household to spend €1,400 on Christmas

The average Irish household is set to spend €1,400 on the upcoming Christmas period, according to a survey by the global advisory firm Deloitte.

The company says the average household will spend €720 on gifts, €431 on food and €279 on socialising.

It says a total of €4.2bn will be spent in Ireland in the lead-up to Christmas, an increase of 7% on the figure for last year.
