Kerr: Post office can 'fill the void' for financial services in rural Ireland

The Post Office Network should be maintained to keep cash services like banking in rural communities, it was claimed today.

The Post Office Development Group meets for the first time today, in a bid to discuss this and other ideas about how local post offices can be retained.

Recent figures show that more people than ever are using card and online banking rather than cash.

However, Post Office Development Group Chairman Bobby Kerr says there is still a need to provide such services.

"Why can't the post office fill that need, for the person who maybe doesn't want to go online, who isn't able to go online, who doesn't have broadband in rural Ireland," he said.

"There are reasons that the post office is well capable of filling the void there."
