ISME and IBOA call for wage agreement change

Business leaders and bank officials are calling for changes to the national wage agreement after figures showing public sector wages up by nearly 10% last year.

The main banking union, the IBOA, says Central Statistics Office data shows government employee wages rising at twice those in the financial services industry.

345,000 people were employed in the public sector by the end of last year - a 2% rise on 2003.

ISME spokesman Jim Curran claimed that the Government is breaking commitments it made to reduce staff.
