ISEQ tumbles amid new Elan woes

The ISEQ fell 50.78 points in trading this morning to 6,225,17 as Elan was plunged into more trouble with further bad news from the United States.

Elan shares plummeted 50c to €5.07 as the ISEQ opened this morning, after news of a second confirmed death of a patient being treated on a combination including the company's multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri.

Financial stocks have also suffered today.

Shares in Allied Irish Bank slipped 15c to €16.15 today while Bank of Ireland shares have fallen 4c to €13.15. Anglo Irish Bank is down 7c to €20.25 while Irish Life & Permanent fell 15c to €14.70.

Elsewhere CRH has slipped 14c to €21 but Kingspan has fared better, climbing 10c to €8.35.

Irish bookmakers Paddy Power has seen share prices fall 10c to €13.65.

Budget airline Ryanair is down 3c to €6.02. The company announced details of a new seat sale today.

The most traded shares today are CRH, AIB, Bank of Ireland, Ryanair and Elan.
