Irish Times wins battle to prevent UK online paper use 'The Times Ireland' title

The UK publisher of a new online newspaper has agreed not to use the name 'The Times Ireland' following legal objections.

The publishers of The Irish Times claimed the title infringed its trademark and copyright.

Times Newspapers Ltd, the UK publishers of The Sunday Times, are behind the new online Irish newspaper.

The launch of the daily digital edition is imminent and it was to be called 'The Times Ireland'.

Last week The Irish Times Ltd went to the High Court raising legal objections to the title claiming it was a breach of its company trademark and copyright.

Their lawyers argued the potential for confusion was enormous.

Times Newspapers Ltd have now agreed not to use the title or the domain name timesireland.ie or any logo on twitter confusingly similar to the IT logo.

Mr Justice Raymond Fulham was told by both sides he could strike out the case.

A spokesperson for News UK & Ireland said: "The Times and The Sunday Times are two of the world's best known quality newspapers, recognised and renowned for our award-winning and world-class journalism.

"We are delighted that an Irish edition of The Times will soon be coming to market for Irish readers and will build on the rich heritage already established with The Sunday Times in Ireland. The new seven-day edition will be an all digital offering - a first for Ireland - and created daily by the Dublin-based team."
