Ireland 'needs to invest €4.5bn in wind'
Experts say Ireland needs to invest around €4.5bn in wind energy over the next five years.
The annual Irish Wind Energy Association conference takes place in Kilkenny today, with the gathering set to highlight the need for Ireland to develop its renewable energy strategy.
Economist Jim Power said there was significant local opposition to wind farms around the country, but that we had a natural advantage in developing the cheapest source of energy.
"It's an absolutely huge economic opportunity for Ireland over the coming years. We have high wind speeds are we're pretty exposed. The arguments wouldn’t be as compelling the UK, but there is a major push there to develop wind energy.
"It's something we need to think much more seriously about."
