IFA president to step back from role after days of controversy

The President of the Irish Farmers Association Eddie Downey is to step back from the organisation following days of controversy at the body.

It was revealed last Friday that Pat Smith - the former general secretary - received a pay and pensions package of €535,000 in 2013.

Tonight the IFA has announced its former chief economist Con Lucey is to return and conduct a review of the situation.

President Downey has apologised for mistakes which he has said have been made and he wants to give the IFA the time and space to carry out the review.
