Irish business representative group IBEC has welcomed the decision by seven Irish universities to award bonus points to Leaving Certificate maths students.

The students who take the higher level paper in Leaving Certificate maths will receive 25 additional points.

However, the group warned that the quality of teachers is the single most important element in improving students' math skills.

IBEC has called on the Government to ring-fence funding for up-skilling secondary achool mathematics teachers.
