Motor trade sees retail sales up 1%

The volume of retail sales increased by 1% last month compared to June 2009.
The latest data from the Central Statistics Office reveals that a number of sectors showed year-on-year increases.
The most significant increase came in the motor trade, which was up at almost 14%. Sales in non-specialised stores were up 1.4% and clothing, footwear and textiles were up 2.6%.
If the motor trade is excluded from the figures, the volume of retail sales decreased by 1.3% last month, however.
The value of retail sales decreased by 2.8% in June 2010 when compared with June 2009 and there was a month-on-month decrease of 0.7%.
However, if motor trades are excluded, there was an annual decrease of 4.8% in the value of retail sales and the month-on-month change was -1.1%.
Provisional estimates for the second quarter of 2010 show the volume of retail sales increased 3.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2010 and there was a quarterly increase of 6.9%.
If motor trades are excluded the volume of retail sales decreased by 0.2% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2010 and there was a quarterly increase of 1.1%.
