EU sugar subsidies are illegal according to the WTO
28/04/2005 - 15:40:17The World Trade Organisation has said that EU subsidies to sugar producers are illegal.
The WTO's appeals body has upheld a decision taken by one of its panels last year, that sugar exporters in the EU are getting more in handouts than permitted under international trade laws.
The EU has said it will uphold the WTO's decision.
Aid agency Oxfam has said the EU subsidies had been harming the economies of developing countries.
