EPA launches trading scheme for greenhouse gases

The Environmental Protection Agency has begun a new scheme whereby companies can buy and sell the right to emit greenhouse gases.

The agency is inviting industrial firms to bid for allowances from the Government to emit certain levels of pollutants such as carbon dioxide and other gases.

The move is part of an EU-wide initiative whereby companies must buy permission to pollute the atmosphere.

Under the scheme, each country agrees to limit their emissions at agreed levels and allow companies to buy and sell allowances within these limitations.
