The Transport Minister Pascal Donohoe has said Michael O'Leary's view on the sale of Aer Lingus is “very much a matter for Michael” - while his job is to represent the Irish taxpayer.
Donohoe was responding to the Ryanair boss' prediction that Aer Lingus will eventually be broken up no matter who succeeds in buying it.
Investors are expecting a third offer from British Airways' owner IAG to buy Aer Lingus - two previous offers from them have already been rebuffed.
“My job in relation to this (the bid for Aer Lingus) would be the represent the Irish taxpayer, who obliviously has a financial stake within the Aer Lingus company.”
“But, also to represent the Irish taxpayer through broader policy priorities that our Government has,” said Donohoe.
