The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank Matthew Elderfield has resigned.
In a statement, the Central Bank of Ireland said he will step down from his position in six month's time.
It is understood he plans to return to the United Kingdom to pursue other interests.
It is being reported that Mr Elderfield has decided to waive a €100,000 bonus which he was due to receive at the end of his contract.
He has been on a salary of more than €300,000 for the last number of years and is entitled to bonuses, but he is waiving his €100,000 bonus for this year.
Business Editor at Newstalk radio, Ian Guider, said: "Also he is stepping aside from some conflicts of interest within the Central Bank where he has a supervisory role.
"Perhaps that is an indication that he has another job lined up when he returns to the UK."
