Data still not available on effect of Groceries Order abolition

The head of the Competition Authority says it is still too early to determine if the abolition of the Groceries Order is having any real effect on retail prices.

Bill Prasifka made the comments in an address to the Oireachtas Enterprise Committee this morning.

When abolishing the ban on below-cost selling in March, the Government claimed households would see their shopping bills fall as a result.

However, the Consumers Association said in July that, while some prices had come down, most had actually increased since the abolition.

Mr Prasifka said today that data was still being analysed from around the country and more time was needed before any conclusions could be drawn.
