CSO reveals decline in retail sales

The volume of retail sales decreased by 0.7% in June compared to the previous month, an annual decrease of 5.5%.

The figures are worse if motor trades are excluded, with retail sales volume down by 1.5% in June.

The Central Statistics Office report found that food, beverages and tobacco sales were the worst hit in June, falling by 9.7%.

Hardware, paints and glass were down 4.8%, while fuel sales fell by 3.9% last month.

The value of retail sales decreased by 1.3% in June 2012 when compared with May 2012, an annual decrease of 4.9%. If motor trades are excluded, there was a monthly decrease of 2.1% in the value of retail sales and an annual decrease of 1%.

David Fitzsimons, CEO, Retail Excellence Ireland, said: "June was another disappointing month for Irish retailers, with many sectors suffering from the poor weather.

"Retailers are continuing to feel the pain as sales decrease year-on -year. With increased media focus on Budget 2013 likely in the coming months, it is very likely that matters with deteriorate further."
