The Crafts Council of Ireland launches its three-year strategic plan for the sector later today and in it are calls for the Government to reduce the VAT rate on Irish craft and design products.
The Government has already reduced the VAT rate on all tourism and hospitality goods and services to 9%, and the Crafts Council of Ireland said because of their high labour costs and tourism potential their products should be included.
It is just one of the proposals put forward in the group's three-year strategy.
Others include measures for developing international sales of Irish craft and design through the export market, plans to partner with Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland in leveraging the tourism potential for the sector, and securing a permanent gallery space in Dublin.
