Telecommunications experts have said the cost of mobile phone calls is likely to drop in 2006.

Ireland has been criticised for having the highest tariffs in Europe, but more competition in the sector is expected to improve services for business and personal customers next year.

Telefonica in Spain has purchased O2, and Liberty Global has come to Ireland and bought Chorus and NTL.

The Telecommunications and Internet Federation of Ireland said today that the return of eircom to the mobile market will also intensify competition.

"You're going to have consolidated players working in the Irish market place and I think that will give a wider variety of services and also lower prices," said Tommy McCabe, Director of the federation.
