Concern that Volkswagen emissions fix will affect car performance

The fuel consumption and performance of the cars caught up in the Volkswagen emissions scandal could be affected by measures taken to correct the vehicles.

It was confirmed yesterday that 80,000 Irish cars are involved.

A statement released by the company yesterday revealed that the motorists hit by the scandal will find out how to get their vehicles corrected in the coming weeks.

The specific numbers of vehicles in Ireland affected per brand are as follows:

Volkswagen Passenger Cars – 34,387

Audi – 16,485

SEAT – 4,365

SKODA – 16,004

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles – 8,107

The numbers include vehicles sold via Volkswagen's authorised dealer network in Ireland, but the number of affected used vehicles imported is still not clear and could be up to a further 30,000 cars.

The group will release the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) details of affected vehicles in the coming days to retailers. An online self-serve process will follow for customers to check whether their vehicle - identified by its VIN - is affected.

The VW group will present their software solution to the relevant authorities at the end of this month. Until that is approved, it is unclear what the fix will be.

There are some suggestions that the solution may compromise the fuel consumption and performance of affected cars.
