Businesses call on government to treble infrastructure spending in Dublin
Dublin businesses have called on the Government to treble its spending on infrastructure.
Employees have raised concern about traffic congestion, lack of public transport and housing, according to a survey by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
Dublin Chamber chief executive officer Gina Quin said: “The Government must show ambition to ensure that public transport infrastructure is capable of meeting the requirements of further growth opportunities.
“As it stands, Government is not spending enough on new transport infrastructure. It is spending 150 million euro per annum, whilst competitor cities such as London and Manchester are spending up to three times as much.
“Businesses call on the Government to commit to triple infrastructure spend.”
The biggest complaints that Dublin employers heard from their employees related to housing and commuting.
Ms Quin added: “Congestion and housing are two major quality of life issues that must be urgently addressed in order to ensure that Dublin remains an attractive place in which to live and work.
“In both cases, the findings should come as no surprise given the lack of investment in public transport infrastructure and also the lack of house-building over the past decade. Dublin’s transport system is considerably behind where it needs to be.”
