BreakingNews.ie has partnered with Washington Post Social Reader, and is now providing it with breaking Irish news.

The Washington Post Social Reader is a free application on Facebook that offers a new way to read news from The Washington Post and more of the Web's best news sources — with your friends.

Once readers are using the app, the stories they read are instantly shared with their friends. Their friends' reads will be shared with them, creating a socially powered newswire of articles.

BreakingNews.ie editor Jill O’Sullivan said: “This is an exciting time for news online and we are thrilled to be involved with such an innovative and prestigious title.

"The Washington Post Social Reader is at the forefront of online news delivery in the US and we look forward to strengthening that relationship and growing our partnership further.”

O’Sullivan went on to say that this is the first of many new innovations and partnerships as BreakingNews.ie starts its second decade of publishing the most up-to-date news online.

Digital business analyst at Thomas Crosbie Media Vicki O’Callaghan said: “Social media will continue to play a large part in our lives. As platforms such as Facebook and Twitter evolve, we aim to introduce new features and elements to make it easier for our users to get breaking news wherever they might be online, be it on our home page, on their mobile or on their favourite social network.”

Vijay Ravindran, senior vice president and chief digital officer of The Washington Post Company, said: “The Social Reader is an experiment in providing news in a friend-centric manner. We're extremely excited by the initial response globally and particularly pleased with our early traction attracting Irish readers.

"This important partnership with BreakingNews.ie will allow us to make the Social Reader even more relevant to our growing Irish audience.”

Of the eight million users who have signed on to use Washington Post Social Reader, more than five million are monthly active users and about 100,000 are from Ireland.
