Bookmaker Paddy Power are paying out on Irish boxer Kenny Egan as the winner in today’s Olympic light heavyweight boxing final.
The firm are paying out more than €220,000 to patriotic punters who backed the Walkinstown man to win gold in Beijing.
Punters have piled on Egan for Olympic success over the past number of weeks with some lucky punters backing the Irish boxer at odds as big as 33/1.
The judging decisions during the four-round fight in the Workers’ Gymnasium this morning were questioned by many and ended Irish hopes of bringing home an Olympic gold medal.
“It’s not fair that punters should be out of pocket because of dodgy judging decisions,” said Paddy Power.
“After that fight we believe that anyone who backed Kenny deserves to be paid and that's exactly what we’re doing. It may be costing us over €220,000, but in our eyes Kenny is every part a champion and we’re treating him as one.”
