Apple expansion set to create 1,000 jobs in Cork

Apple has been granted planning permission for its major Hollyhill expansion proposal, clearing the way for the creation of 1,000 extra jobs, writes Gordon Deegan.

An appeal by local residents to An Bord Pleanála has failed to stop the project going ahead.

The tech giant will now proceed with its plan to build a four-storey office block and provide another 752 car spaces on the city’s northside.

The decision comes nine months after Apple chief Tim Cook briefed staff in Cork on the expansion, which will bring Apple’s workforce in Cork to around 6,000 people.

The company intended to deliver the new office block by the middle of next year, but the appeal to An Bord Pleanála has pushed back that timeline by several months.

A number of local residents objected to the development because of concerns about is scale and proximity to their homes.

Residents said they would be “practically living on an industrial estate” if the project went ahead.

However, An Bord Pleanála ruled that the proposal would not seriously impact on local properties and would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety.

The appeals board also said the plan was in accordance with the Cork City Development Plan.
