€6m data centre investment to create up to 50 jobs

Carphone Warehouse has today announced an €6m investment in a new data centre to power its own mobile operator, which will launch in July 2015.

The data centre, which will officially open in January, will be supported by technology from telecoms manufacturers Huawei and Mvneco.

The data centre, located in Citywest, Dublin, will house the technical infrastructure to develop and operate what will be Ireland’s newest mobile operator in 2015.

Commenting, Peter Scott, managing director of Carphone Warehouse Ireland said the significant investment “reflects the ambitious plans Carphone Warehouse has for our new mobile operator.

“Our plan is to offer a highly innovative, next-generation service that is currently not available in today's mobile market. To fully realise this, and to support the massive amounts of data generated by consumer mobile use, we require dependable, future-proof technology.

“The new data centre will not only deliver reliability, but give Carphone Warehouse the necessary infrastructure to support an innovative offering with a real competitive edge.”

The new mobile operator represents a total €30m investment here and will lead to the creation of up to 50 full-time jobs.

Carphone Warehouse's mobile operator, which will have its own distinct brand and dedicated network capacity, is targeting up to 6% of the market within the first five years.

“The creation of Ireland’s newest mobile operator is an extremely exciting development for the company, and the realisation of one of our greatest ambitions," said Mr Scott.

"Equally, it is a significant development for the Irish mobile market and consumers.

“We believe that the blend of our retail footprint, mobile expertise, consumer credentials, and professional team leaves us well placed to make a real impact in the Irish mobile market.

"July 2015 will see the culmination of years of determined work. We’re very excited to share more with the public in the weeks and months ahead, including our consumer offering and brand identity."

Carphone Warehouse currently employs more than 700 people in over 90 retail outlets across Ireland.
