A Chinese farmer has faced a barrage of criticism after it emerged he keeps his 100-year-old mother in a pigsty.

Chen Shoutian has come under fire from residents in the country following a local TV report which claimed his mother had spent the past two years in the animal pen with a four-legged porker - but he insists she is happy to share a room with a pig.

He told the Jiangsu Television station: "She wants to stay here because she feels it is convenient."

Chen also told a local TV station there is no room in his six-bedroom house for his mother.
