Vodafone delays moving customer care jobs to North

Vodafone has said that it is delaying the transfer of more than 300 customer care jobs from Dublin and Dundalk to the North to allow for talks with workers to continue.

According to the Communications Workers Union, in the last 12 months 500 Irish customer care jobs were slated for export abroad by Vodafone.

The company had decided to move its mobile customer care functions to a new third party contractor, Teleperformance, based in Newry.

The decision impacts 26 Vodafone roles and 290 roles with the existing third party contractor, Rigney Dolphin.

The telecoms firm says the move to Newry will not now happen next Tuesday, as planned, to allow for the consultation process to move forward.

"Following a meeting of the parties involved in the intensive discussions yesterday it was agreed that, while progress is being made on resolving outstanding issues, more time is required and for this reason, Vodafone has agreed that the transfer to Teleperformance will not happen on May 8," the company said.

"By delaying the decision on postponement until today the company has maintained a strong sense of urgency about consultation.

"The urgency remains and Vodafone is committed to resolving the outstanding issues and reaching a solution as quickly as possible in order to agree certainty for the people impacted by the changes."

Vodafone Ireland is one of the country’s biggest employers with over 1,200 staff in Ireland.
