Strong earthquake reported off western Indonesia

A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.2 has struck off the coast of western Indonesia, but there is no danger of a tsunami, officials said.

The US Geological Survey said today's quake was centered about 400 miles south-west of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, at a depth of nine miles.

Indonesian meteorological official Suharjono said there was no threat of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Two powerful quakes measuring magnitude 8.6 and 8.2 triggered a tsunami watch on Wednesday in more than two dozen nations and island territories, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa.
