GAA training ban period changed
Delegates at today's Annual GAA Congress in Killenard, Co Laois have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a Central Council motion to back a new training ban schedule for inter-county teams.
The motion, which proposed to introduce a rolling training ban based on a team's exit from the previous season's Championship, was carried by 84% to 16%.
Senior inter-county teams who exit the Championship in June can now commence training from November 15, while a July exit means that teams can return to training from December 1.
Teams who exit the Championship in August can recommence training from December 8, while those who reach the All-Ireland finals in September can only return to training from December 29.
There will be no senior inter-county training or games from December 21 to 28, while the months of November and December will be closed months from training and games for all other inter-county teams.
Inter-county U-21 football teams can commence training on January 1, while their hurling counterparts will be permitted to train from May 1.
Inter-county minor hurling and football teams will be allowed to start training from March 1.
Outgoing GAA President Christy Cooney urged delegates to ensure that these rules were stringently implemented.
"I would implore to you to stop undermining the rules of the Association," he said.
"You should stand up as leaders of the Association and I appeal to you to do what is right."
