Minister for Children 'horrified' by neglect case

Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald has said that she was "shocked and horrified" at the case of a woman who neglected her five children over a two-year period.

Minister Fitzgerald made the comments after the 34-year-old woman was jailed for 18 months yesterday.

Her young children were taken into care in 2007 and were unable to use the toilet, wash or feed themselves and were poorly educated.

Minister Fitzgerald said that it is hard to believe that this type of neglect can happen in Ireland these days.

"We have to face up [to the fact] that some parents are failing," she said.

"In this case as soon as the details, I understand, became available to the authorities, people acted and took steps.

"The gardaí acted and the HSE acted. But it does take a community to protect a child."
