Twitter to open Dublin office
Twitter is to set up an international office in Dublin, it was announced this morning.
"Ireland is trending. Twitter to establish international office in Dublin. #idairl," was how the IDA broke the news, appropriately enough via a tweet.
The social networking giant is to join other world leaders in the online business such as Facebook, Yahoo! and Google.
The office will be established to support the company's international growth.
More details are expected to be released later on the development. It was not revealed how many positions will be created, but the jobs are expected to be a mix of technical positions and customer support roles.
Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said the announcement was a massive win for Ireland.
Mr Bruton noted that other big players in the internet sphere had started off small in Ireland and gone on to become huge employers.
“Today’s announcement that it is to establish an international office in Ireland is a massive win, and shows there is real ground for Ireland’s claim to be the internet capital of Europe," he said.
"It also shows that, despite our difficulties, we still have real strengths as an economy, and it is important to acknowledge that.
“The challenge now is to build on our strengths and the presence in Ireland of the world-leading companies like Twitter to build an indigenous engine of growth and get people back to work.
"Today’s announcement shows that we have real grounds for optimism in facing that challenge”.
