Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said the public finances are now "better than on track".

In an address to the Dáil this afternoon, Mr Noonan said the country's debt level was now sustainable.

Official figures on tax receipts and government spending for the first four months of the year are not due to be released until tomorrow afternoon, but Mr Noonan revealed today that "things are better than on track".

He added however that tax income and expenditure varies through the year and that it would be early July before there was a more certain overall financial picture.

"But, so far, so good," he said.
