Comedians Alan Carr and Michael McIntyre do battle at tonight's British Comedy Awards with three nominations each.

The duo go head-to-head in two categories with McIntyre also up for best live stand-up and Carr nominated for best new television comedy with 'Chatty Man'.

But Harry Hill could crash their party if he bags best comedy entertainment programme for the third time in four years, and reclaims the best comedy personality award he last won in 2006.

The 20th annual British Comedy Awards also promises to be a good night for the BBC's new sitcom 'Outnumbered', leading the field with five nominations.

The family comedy, hailed by critics for its improvised style, has earned newcomer nominations for all three of its child actors.

Claire Skinner, who plays middle-class mother Sue Brockman, is up for best comedy actress, while the show also features in the best sitcom category, vying against Channel 4's 'Peep Show' and 'The IT Crowd'.

Sacha Baron Cohen's controversial movie 'Bruno', about a gay Austrian fashion reporter, and 'In The Loop', the movie spin-off of the BBC's dark political comedy 'The Thick of It', are both up for best film.

'Pulling', BBC3's comedy about three hard-drinking thirtysomething women which was axed after two series and ended with a one-off special in May, is up for best television comedy drama.

Two of the show's stars, Rebekah Staton and Tanya Franks, are also in the running for best female newcomer.

'The Inbetweeners' star Simon Bird, who won best male comedy newcomer in 2008, has sealed his success this year with a nomination for best television comedy actor, taking on Webb and Rob Brydon.

The Welsh stars of 'Gavin and Stacey' Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon are also up for an award each, for last year's Christmas special.

Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse have earned a nomination for the second series of their sketch show and would be the first British Comedy Award either comedian has won in more than a decade.

Tonight's ceremony will be hosted by Jonathan Ross, who pulled out last year in the wake of the "Sachsgate" scandal, and will air on ITV1 from 9.30pm.
