Govt plan to take debt issues out of courts

The Government has plans to set up a Central Office for Debt Enforcement that would take personal debt issues out of the courts.

The measure is contained in proposals by the Law Reform Commission to change Irish law on personal debt, which it says is "Victorian and outdated".

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said reforming the law on indebtedness means that nobody will go to jail because they can't afford to pay a debt or fine.
