Cowen: Doherty's wage will not exceed Govt limit

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has told the Dáil that AIB executive Colm Doherty will take over as managing director of the bank on a salary which does not breach the Government's €500,000 cap on bankers' pay.

Yesterday, the Cabinet refused to allow Mr Doherty take up the job on his existing salary of €633,000.

Mr Doherty had been chosen to fill a new post of managing director at the bank yesterday.

But Finance Minister Brian Lenihan had said the Government has refused a request to exceed the pay limit set down.
