Terry out as Rooney leads

John Terry was ruled out of England’s friendly against Brazil in Doha this evening, meaning Wayne Rooney was named captain of his country for the first time.

Terry failed to recover from an Achilles injury so Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott was chosen to partner Matthew Upson in central defence.

Fabio Capello was also without Michael Carrick due to an ankle injury, leading to a first England appearance in 14 months for Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

Capello also sprung a surprise in goal where Ben Foster kept his place ahead of Robert Green, who had been expected to play.
